The difference between Chinese Engineers and their foreign counterparts(1)

For the product development, the developers matter. Like engineers, like product. And I would like to talk about foreign engineers. (Here the foreign countries specifically refer to Europe and United States). There are many differences between foreign engineers and Chinese engineers.

Foreign engineers are elder and get a better team spirit

When joining a foreign R & D team, at first glance most foreign engineers are elder. I have worked with more than 40 foreign engineers. Only 2 are less than 30 years old. Most of them are middle-aged, and several are over 60 years old. While their Chinese counterparts are much younger, most in their 20s or 30s.

The second obvious phenomenon is that foreign engineers are happier like children. Getting off work on time and enjoy life after. Many engineers go abroad for vacation in December. I even came across an engineer left for half a year making a world tour. In China, it is a different story. Mostly young engineers have to work really hard to cover the cost of living and save money as much as possible for the future life. Men in China tend to get married in the late 20s or early 30s. And getting houses of their own are supposed to be a very important factor for the marriage. Most engineers work for companies located in so-called first-line cities: Beijing,Shanghai,Guangzhou,Shenzhen. The ratio of house prices to average income in the range 25-32.5! It won’t be easy for the young engineers to be happy with such a heavy burden ahead. And the competition is fierce with 7-8 million graduates pouring into the workforce market every year. Not every young people working in the big cities can end up staying there.
